Why DewaPoker is a Top Choice for Online Poker Enthusiasts

Key Terms Explained

1. Rake

The rake is the small fee the poker room takes from each cash game pot or tournament buy-in as its profit. It is not a tip for the dealer. Think of it like a cover charge or a small service fee at a physical casino for providing the table, software, and security. If you misunderstand this, you will misjudge the true cost of playing and choose tables with unsustainable slot poker rates, slowly draining your bankroll regardless of your skill.

2. Bankroll

Your bankroll is the total amount of money you have dedicated exclusively to playing poker. It is not your rent money or your general savings. A proper bankroll is a separate fund for managing the inherent ups and downs of the game. Imagine it as the operating capital for a small business. Misunderstanding this leads to playing at stakes too high for your funds, resulting in going broke from normal variance, not bad play.

3. Variance

Variance is the short-term swings in your results caused by luck. It is not a measure of your skill. Over a few hands or sessions, even the best player can lose, and a weak player can win. It is the statistical noise before the signal of skill emerges. Think of it like weather versus climate. A cold week does not mean global warming is false. Misunderstanding this causes tilt, poor decision-making after bad beats, and a failure to stick to a proven strategy.

4. Tight-Aggressive (TAG)

This is a fundamental winning poker strategy. It means playing a selective range of strong starting hands (tight) but betting and raising aggressively with them when you do play. It is not about playing many hands passively. The analogy is a skilled predator: it waits patiently for the right opportunity, then strikes decisively. Misunderstanding this leads to playing too many weak hands or playing strong hands too timidly, both of which are exploitable and costly.

5. Pot Odds

Pot odds are the ratio between the current size of the pot and the cost of a call you are considering. It is a mathematical guide for whether a call is profitable in the long run. Think of it like calculating the payoff on a bet. If the pot offers you 5-to-1 on your money, you need to win at least 1 time in 6 to break even. Not understanding this means you make calls based on hope, not math, consistently losing money over time.

6. Position

Your position is your seating order relative to the dealer button, determining when you act in a hand. Late position is a massive advantage. It is not just a seating chart. Acting after your opponents gives you more information. The analogy is in a negotiation: the person who speaks last has heard all other arguments and holds the power. Misunderstanding the value of position leads to playing too many hands from early seats, a fundamental and expensive leak.

7. Tilt
